OUR STORY
PROMOTING LIVER HEALTH FOR ALL
HbcCare is a research initiative of the University of Calgary committed to enhancing liver health in underserved communities across Alberta. Supported by Alberta Health’s Cancer Research for Screening and Prevention Funding Program, the project aims to improve access to the full cascade of liver health services, including screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, particularly for chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV). Multiple sub-studies and collaborations are underway within HbcCare, all working toward the broader goal of reducing the burden of liver cancer and improving community health outcomes.
HbcCare began with a simple but important concern: too many people in underserved communities are missing opportunities for timely liver health information, screening, and follow-up care. In response, HbcCare was developed as a community-engaged initiative that works alongside communities to better understand these gaps and address them in practical, culturally grounded ways. Through outreach, awareness, screening, and research, HbcCare brings liver health support closer to where communities live, gather, and build trust.
OBJECTIVES OF HbcCare PROGRAM

1
Increase Access to Liver Health Services
Improve access to hepatitis B and C screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for underserved communities in Alberta, addressing healthcare gaps and reducing liver cancer risks.
2
Understand Community Needs and Barriers to Co-Design Effective Intervention
Through community-engaged research the program identifies perceptions, challenges, and support systems influencing healthcare decisions, focusing especially on newcomer and immigrant populations.
3
Strengthen Screening and Care Pathways
HbcCare works to enhance existing screening practices, improve patient retention, and develop a standardized provincial pathway for hepatitis B care in primary healthcare settings.
